"Personal Jesus" is Depeche Mode's twenty-third UK single, released on August 29, 1989, and the first single from the then upcoming album Violator. The song was covered by Johnny Cash, Lollipop Lust Kill and Gravity Kills in 2002, Marilyn Manson, Richard Cheese, french band No one is innocent in 2004, Tori Amos in 2005, and the Dixie Hummingbirds in 2006. The song itself was inspired by the book "Elvis and Me" by Priscilla Presley. According to songwriter Martin Gore, "It's a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It's about how Elvis was her man and her mentor and how often that happens in love relationships; how everybody's heart is like a god in some way, and that's not a very balanced view of someone, is it?"

Na verdade nunca pensei que o velhinho Johnny Cash fosse fazer uma versão de uns jovens... Assumi logo que a do velho viesse primeiro.
Inconscientemente, também deve ter ajudado o facto de gostar de passar a de Cash primeiro e dpois passar a de depeche logo de seguida.
Bem, isto só faz subir Johnny Cash na minha consideração.
Para além disso a versão dele é brutal.
